  • Christmas Gifts of Travel Memories

I don’t know about you guys, but for me, I found that as our children got older, it became more difficult to choose gifts that were suited to them. So now, in today’s world, I believe most teenagers already have the latest tech gadgets, fashion accessories, sports gear etc. Some of them even have the latest iPhone and Xbox. As a result, parents are struggling to source the ideal Christmas presents. This is where we, at Travel Times come up with some exciting ideas for gifting teenagers travel experiences that combine adventure and fun and it also means you, as parents, can tag along, have some fun, and get to spend some quality time with your offspring while making fabulous memories too. We have listed below a few ideas that may be suited to your budget and individual taste. Concert Tickets: Purchase tickets for their favourite band or artist abroad and make a weekend break around it. For example, Coldplay are performing in Rome from the 12th to the 16th June 2024 Outdoor Adventure Weekend : Plan a weekend getaway for activities like zip-lining, hiking, or camping. Annecy, France has a plethora of outdoor activities like hiking, biking or boating and it’s also one of the most popular paragliding sights in the world and it’s only a short flight away too. Surfing or Watersports Lessons: Arrange lessons for surfing, paddleboarding, or another water activity at a coastal destination. In fairness, Ireland boasts some of the world’s most incredible surfing spots along its rugged coastline. Bundoran is known as the surf capital of Ireland and also offers lots of other watersports. Hot Air Balloon Ride: Provide an unforgettable experience with a hot air balloon ride, offering a unique perspective of the landscape. I did this in Morocco and it was a truly unforgettable experience. Theatre or Broadway Show Tickets: Gift tickets to a theatre production or Broadway show, combined with a stay in your favourite city. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is currently running in London and New York. For older teens (and adults) U2 Live at The Sphere Las Vegas runs until March 2024. Cooking Class and Culinary Tour: One of my favourite gifts for the foodie teen would have to be a culinary tour in one of Italy’s many regions. Italy is renowned for its diverse and exquisite food and is home to some of the best cookery classes and culinary tours available. There are plenty to choose from, from Pizza and spaghetti making to truffle hunting. Flights operate daily too. Shopping Trips: What teenager doesn’t love a good shopping spree? especially when it’s all about them! Gift them an overnight/weekend trip to a shopping outlet in Europe or if your budget allows head for Woodbury Commons premium outlets just outside New York City, I promise, they will love you forever!! Theme Park Passes: There are lots of theme parks around Europe, the UK and the USA. Depending on your budget you could purchase tickets for any of these destinations combined with theme park passes for the duration of your stay. A really popular one is PortAventura World in Salou, Spain. It’s the biggest theme park in Spain and the third largest in Europe and again there are year-round flights at really good value. Visit The Winter Wonderland – Lapland: I don’t know any teenager who wouldn’t love the gift of a lifetime at Christmas and that’s a visit to The Artic Circle. Lapland is synonymous with winter magic. Blanketed in snow during the colder months, it offers opportunities for activities like snowmobiling, dog sledging, ice fishing and cross-country skiing and no visit to Lapland would be complete without a visit to the world-famous Santa Claus Village where children and adults alike get to meet the main man himself, Santa, explore his workshop, and experience the Christmas spirit year-round. Find out more about Lapland packages on Sunway.ie . There’s still plenty of time to organise and book the ultimate Christmas gift for your “Dynamic Explorers in the Adventure of Adolescence” Teenagers. In doing one of these memorable experiences with your teens you will be creating positive experiences that will contribute to their overall happiness and as I said earlier, they will love you forever!!

  • The Comeback Countries & Where we’re Travelling in 2024

2023 can safely be called the year that travel came roaring back, with bookings for certain destinations superseding pre-pandemic numbers. Community tourism pioneer, G Adventures , this year reveals the places that are seeing the most traction in terms of forward bookings thanks to exciting new reasons to visit. What’s most exciting is that people are looking to travel to some more ‘traditional’ destinations in a new way – a way that gives back to local people and communities, and gets them closer to the culture and tradition of a place.  G Adventures’ founder, Bruce Poon Tip, says travellers have changed over the past three years and are now looking for deeper, more meaningful experiences.  “What we’re seeing is that people want to stay longer and go deeper into a destination. They’re travelling less frequently; instead of taking three one-week trips a year, they’re staying longer in a single destination. And while they are there they want to connect with local people and their cultures, and to experience community tourism in its purest form.  “We’re also still seeing a lot of travellers checking off those big ‘bucket list’ trips, with many still making up for lost time, and they’re keen to stay active when they travel – that’s why we’re seeing such huge growth in some of our most iconic locations,” said Mr. Poon Tip.   Packed with the best destinations travellers can enjoy in 2024, the Where To Travel list focuses not just on meaningful community tourism experiences, but also places which have new and noteworthy reasons to visit.  JAPAN  – Travellers can’t get enough of Japan since it reopened, with the land of the rising sun also seeing rising bookings. G Adventures reports a 134 per cent increase in bookings for 2024, and this trend is set to continue with the launch of the small group adventure operator’s Geluxe Collection of premium active trips. The new Japan itinerary includes hiking the remote Michinoku Coastal Trail, which was constructed after the tsunami to bring community tourism back to Iwate. G Adventures is the first major operator to offer this hike. GET THERE:  G Adventures’  Japan: Kyoto, Tokyo & the Michinoku Coastal Trail  trip is priced from €6999pp for an 11-day trip from Tokyo to Kyoto. Travellers will discover villages outside Kyoto by foot, as well as hiking up to the Unotori shrine in Fudai, Iwate, to witness a unique cultural performance that has all but died out in other parts of Japan. PORTUGAL –  The numbers don’t lie. Portugal has seen stand-out growth with traveller numbers tripling since 2019 and up 33 per cent compared to 2022. Affordable and accessible, with fantastic food, culture and history, there are plenty of reasons to want to visit this European gem. We say go before it gets even more popular, as its star looks set to continue to rise.  GET THERE:  G Adventures’  Highlights of Portugal  itinerary is priced from €1299pp for a seven-day trip from Lisbon to Porto. On this trip, travellers will sit down to a traditional meal to the sound of a Fado performance by Portuguese folk music artists in one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods, and immerse themselves in history and culture at UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Monastery of Batalha, Coimbra University, and the picturesque town of Sintra. UZBEKISTAN –  Uzbekistan – and the ‘Stans in general – have become quite the hotspot as people look to check off big ‘bucket list’ destinations and get further afield to lesser-known countries. Uzbekistan has seen a 53 per cent increase year over year, also usurping 2019 by 16 percent. The stunning Center for Islamic Civilization in Tashkent is set to open its doors in April 2024, and joins the Center for Contemporary Arts, which was opened in 2019, as two new cultural hubs set to attract the attention of travellers.  GET THERE:  G Adventures’  Highlights of Uzbekistan  trip is priced from €1549pp for a 10-day trip from Tashkent return. During the trip, travellers will head out into the desert to visit Chashma Complex, a pilgrimage site in the territory of Nurata, dominated by ruins of Alexander the Great’s fortress, visit the remote Aydarkul Lake for a swim before continuing on for an overnight stay in a local yurt camp, where they enjoy an authentic Uzbekistan dinner and an evening Kazakh singing show.  INDIA –  India has picked up the pace in the past year with bookings doubling between 2022 and 2023. G Adventures partnership with National Geographic means exclusive experiences are built into every itinerary.  GET THERE:  A  National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures North India Highlights  trip is priced from €1199 per person from Delhi return. In Jaipur, known as the “Pink City,” travellers will meet with a local historian and sociology scholar to learn about India’s complex social fabric and traditions, and discuss a range of topics from the country’s belief systems to its architecture. MEXICO  – Vibrant and colourful Mexico has proven more popular than pre-pandemic, helped by the introduction of new trips to the G Adventures portfolio. These include two new Geluxe Collection premium active itineraries, which put a fresh active spin on what has been seen as a more traditional ‘beach’ destination. Up 24 per cent than in 2019, and 28 per cent when compared to last year, Mexico continues to make consistent gains.  GET THERE:  A 14-day  Mexico: Central Mexico & the Yucatan Peninsula trip is priced from €5399pp, travelling from Oaxaca to Tulum. Travellers will wander the cobblestone streets and markets of Oaxaca and devour mole in Puebla, before biking through agave fields and taking a break from the heat with a swim in a jungle sinkhole near Merida.  VIETNAM  – Another country that was late to reopen but has doubled its traveller numbers since 2022 is Vietnam, which is also a great value choice for families looking for adventure on their next trip. With tasty food, beautiful sights and friendly people, it makes a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about a different culture in a fun and engaging way. GET THERE:  A 12-day  Vietnam Family Adventure  is priced from €1379 per adult and €1219 per child, travelling from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. This trip visits Oodles of Noodles, a G for Good project supporting former street youth where travellers help prepare and cook a number of different types of noodles.   GREECE –  As travellers have started flocking back to Europe, Greece has seen huge growth, up 90 per cent from 2019 numbers and 24 per cent year on year. One of the best ways to avoid the crowds and get amongst it with locals, is by boat. Taking travellers to remote islands to enjoy local cuisine and culture, G Adventures’ Sailing programme epitomises community tourism, making sure wealth is distributed to lesser-known locales while still taking in the highlights of the islands. GET THERE:  A 10-day  Sailing Greece – Santorini to Santorini  trip is priced from €1849 per person, travelling from Santorini return. On-shore experiences include strolling through the markets of Syros, uncovering the beauty of the Venetian ruins in Paros hiking through the trails and paths of Sifnos.  THAILAND –  Thailand also continues its epic comeback, and we can expect it to boom even more as travellers head there before the ‘White Lotus Effect’ takes hold, with filming for the third season set to begin in 2024. Up 76 per cent in traveller numbers year on year, Thailand is still a solid choice for young travellers and backpackers looking for an affordable escape.  GET THERE:  The  Bangkok to Hanoi: Chiang Mai, Night Markets & Streetside Bars  Roamies trip in partnership with Hostelworld is priced from €899pp for a nine day trip from Bangkok to Hanoi. This trip includes a visit to Yimsoo Cafe in Bangkok that offers training and economic opportunities for people living with disabilities.  SOUTH KOREA –  With Asia trending since its reopening, South Korea has also proven a welcome surprise in terms of its popularity with numbers doubling in 2023 compared to 2019. Helped by popular culture – K-Pop and K-dramas – South Korea also offers a wealth of traditional culture, incredible food, and exciting experiences for travellers.  GET THERE:  An eight-day  Best of South Korea  trip is priced from €2499 per person, travelling from Seoul return. Travellers will see the highlights in and around Seoul plus visit folk villages, unique Korean temples, and the bustling markets of Busan, as well as learning about the sombre history of North and South Korea and taking an excursion to the Demilitarized Zone separating the two.  ITALY –  Another popular post-Covid destination is Italy, which is up 30 per cent from 2019 numbers, and 24 per cent year on year. With travellers looking to head to their dream destinations, it makes sense that perennial favourite Italy would be high on everyone’s lists. With G Adventures’ Local Living programme, travellers are taken off the road most travelled to really experience what it is like to live like a local.  GET THERE:  An eight-day  Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast  trip is priced from €1849 per person, travelling from Naples return. On this trip, travellers live like one of the region’s locals, discovering the small towns, mountain trails, and local customs of this uniquely beautiful place, tucking into bed at a converted 17th-century monastery home base. • New Study Reveals the Best American Theme Parks to Visit in 2024 (and the Top Spot isn't Taken by a Disney Park)

In a recent study conducted by Westgate Palace Hotel at Universal , the most sought-after theme parks in the United States have been unveiled, with Universal’s Islands of Adventure securing the coveted top spot. Surprisingly, the renowned Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida falls just short, taking second place in the rankings. Other notable entries in the top five include Disney California Adventure, Cedar Point in Ohio, and Silver Dollar City in Missouri. The comprehensive research, conducted by Westgate Palace Hotel at Universal, meticulously evaluated every amusement park across the nation based on three crucial factors: Instagram hashtags, monthly Google search volume, and the percentage of ‘excellent’ reviews on TripAdvisor. These factors were then amalgamated into an index, assigning each amusement park a total score to determine the most popular in the United States. Customer experiences were given precedence, with TripAdvisor reviews carrying extra weight due to their direct reflection of visitor satisfaction. Islands of Adventure Claims the Crown Universal’s Islands of Adventure emerged as the frontrunner, boasting an impressive total index score of 91.1 out of 100. Renowned for its thrilling rides and experiences, including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the park garnered 52,310 reviews, with an impressive 74% falling under the ‘excellent’ rating. TripAdvisor ratings, combined with 854,821 Instagram hashtags, solidified Islands of Adventure’s position as the most popular theme park in the United States. Magic Kingdom and Disney California Adventure Follow Closely Disney’s Magic Kingdom, home to the iconic Cinderella’s Castle, narrowly missed the top spot but secured a strong second place with a score of 90.4. Meanwhile, Disney California Adventure Park claimed the third spot with an index score of 84.2, making it the third highest-rated park in the country on TripAdvisor. Cedar Point and Silver Dollar City Shine Cedar Point, often hailed as the ‘rollercoaster capital of the world,’ earned the fourth position, while Silver Dollar City in Missouri rounded out the top five. Cedar Point’s impressive array of roller coasters and Silver Dollar City’s diverse entertainment offerings contributed to their high rankings Additional Highlights from the Study The study also revealed Disney’s Animal Kingdom as the sixth best-rated theme park, with Universal Studios Hollywood, California’s Disneyland Park, Dollywood, and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park securing positions seven through ten. Insights from Westgate Palace Hotel at Universal A spokesperson from Westgate Palace Hotel at Universal said, “It comes as no surprise that theme parks operated by Walt Disney and Universal Studios have dominated the list. What may be surprising, however, is that the research crowns Universal as the best-rated theme park, beating all four major Disney parks.” They further added, “Universal Studios Orlando stands out as the premier theme park destination in America due to its unrivalled customer experience and unwavering commitment to visitor satisfaction.” “In Florida, where we recorded 37.9 million tourists in the first three months of 2023 alone, the appeal of these theme parks is undeniable. From the enchanting world of Walt Disney World to the exhilarating experiences at Universal Orlando, Florida’s theme parks add a touch of magic to any vacation. Our family-friendly hotel suites, strategically located on I-Drive, offer a welcoming retreat after a day of park exploration,” the spokesperson concluded. This surge highlights Jamaica’s resilience amidst global challenges, solidifying its position as a premier travel destination and a top choice for holidaymakers in the Caribbean. Donovan White, Director of Tourism, said, “Our bullish tourism recovery plan has enabled us to set our targets high and implement our latest plans as we continue to unveil new horizons in tourism, with the exciting addition of Excellence Oyster Bay, Wyndham, and the vibrant arrival of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino”. These new establishments embody the spirit of the island’s dedication to diverse hospitality experiences, inviting travellers to indulge in unparalleled luxury, authentic cultural immersion, and thrilling entertainment options. Building on this momentum, Edmund Bartlett has set a target to welcome 250,000 visitors from the UK and Ireland by 2025, aligning with Jamaica’s position as the top Caribbean choice for British travellers. Jamaica’s tourism development enters an unprecedented phase with investments totalling $4 to $5 billion. Notable among the island’s developments is the projection of 20,000 new rooms in the next 10 to 15 years, including the much-anticipated debut of 2,000 new rooms in 2024. Exciting upcoming openings include the first 1,000 rooms of the Princess Grand Jamaica, the 753-room Riu Palace Aquarelle, and the 450-room Unico Hotel in Montego Bay.
