Carlow, often overlooked in favour of its larger neighbours, is one of Ireland’s best-kept secrets - and if you’re planning to stay overnight (which we highly recommend), Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort is the place to be, with top-tier amenities, an elegant spa, and a championship golf course.

Here’s our guide to the top things to do in Carlow.

1. Huntington Castle & Gardens

A visit to Huntington Castle is like stepping into a fairytale, or as much of a fairytale as you can get being in Carlow. Built in the 17th century, this estate is still lived in by descendants of its original owners. You can take a guided tour of the castle, explore the gardens, or visit the Temple of the Goddess, an underground chamber dedicated to the goddess Isis.

2. Brownshill Dolmen

If you love ancient history, the Brownshill Dolmen is a must-see. This prehistoric tomb, dating back over 5,000 years, has the largest capstone in Europe, weighing over 100 tonnes. How did our ancestors move it into place? Why Carlow? No one knows for sure. It’s a quick visit, but well worth the stop for curious minds.

3. Altamont Gardens

Often called the most romantic garden in Ireland, Altamont Gardens is a paradise of winding walkways, flowerbeds, and a lake. The 16-hectare estate is particularly gorgeous in spring when the snowdrops and daffodils bloom. Possibly the most romantic thing in the county.

4. Carlow County Museum

Want to get to know Carlow inside and out (are you sure)? Carlow County Museum is the place to do it. This museum is packed with local history, including the 12th-century wooden pulpit from Carlow Cathedral and a chilling reminder of Ireland’s penal laws. It’s free to visit and small enough to explore in under an hour.

5. VISUAL Carlow

For a modern twist, stop by VISUAL Carlow, Ireland’s largest gallery space outside of Dublin. With ever-changing exhibitions, experimental performances, and a fantastic café, it’s a hub for creativity in the heart of Carlow town. Even if contemporary art isn’t your thing, VISUAL has a way of making it intriguing.

6. Blackstairs Mountains – A Hiker’s Dream

If the great outdoors is calling and you're eager to get far away from Carlow town, the Blackstairs Mountains provide some of the best hiking in the region. From the summit of Mount Leinster, you’ll get panoramic views stretching across Carlow, Wexford, and even into Wicklow.

7. Carlow Brewing Company – A Sip of Local Flavour

Fancy a pint with a story? Carlow Brewing Company, home of the famous O’Hara’s beer, has been crafting traditional Irish ales and stouts since 1996. You can tour the brewery, learn about the brewing process, and, most importantly, taste some of Ireland’s best craft beers. We recommend getting a good buzz here to avoid the realisation that yes, you are in Carlow. The award-winning O’Hara’s Irish Stout is a must-try for any beer lover.

8. The Barrow Way – A Riverside Adventure

The River Barrow is one of Ireland’s most beautiful waterways, and the Barrow Way walking and cycling route follows it for miles. If you want a leisurely riverside walk, a cycle along the towpath, or even a kayaking adventure, the Barrow Way makes all of this possible. Along the way, you’ll pass villages, historic locks, and plenty of picnic spots. Just try not to get any mouthfuls.

Where to Stay - Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort

After a day of exploring, Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort is the perfect place to unwind. This four-star resort offers luxurious rooms, a spa, a championship golf course, and an excellent restaurant and barBook your stay at Mount Wolseley.

Carlow isn’t exactly the first place that springs to mind when you think of an exciting Irish getaway. It’s not Dublin, it’s not Galway, and it’s certainly not the Wild Atlantic Way, or really anywhere else... But for a county that often flies under the radar, Carlow does have a surprising amount going for it. There’s enough here to keep you entertained, at least for a little while. And if all else fails, there’s always the spa at Mount Wolseley and a pint of O’Hara’s to fall back on.
